Get your mini-skirt on! Mary Quant’s in town
The swinging sixties came to Droitwich in October 2019 with an event celebrating the life of miniskirt pioneer Dame Mary Quant. Examples of her work were brought to Droitwich by V & A contributor Ruth Lowe, who talked about the early life, career, and designs of this iconic British designer.
Dame Mary is known for her sleek, streamlined and vibrant designs that revolutionised womens’ wear and defined the look of London in the 1960s. Her garments borrowed from men’s clothing, took risks and blurred gender lines to create ‘unisex’ clothing. She is credited with defining the look for a new generation of women who rebelled against pressure to dress like their mothers. Ruth Lowe, an authority on Mary Quant, has appeared on the Antiques Road Show and The One Show, and was featured in the Financial Times’ monthly magazine ‘How To Spend It’. She is an avid collector of all things Quant, including an original Mary Quant designer mini car. The nostalgic evening included a light-hearted quiz and songs from the ’60s.
